The Review of Mac OS X Leopard v.10.5
November 26th, 2007 | Posted by Lynda RaphaelThe biggest system update in Mac history now known as Mac OS X version 10.5 “Leopard” is the sixth major release of the Mac OS X operating system for Apple's Mac line of personal computers, and is the successor to Mac OS X v10.4 “Tiger”. Leopard was released on October 26, 2007, and is available in two variants: a desktop version suitable for personal computers, and a server version, Mac OS X Server. So, now that the Tiger has mutated and the spotlight shines on the Leopard; it’s time to hear loud and clear what trials and tribulations were encountered with the Leopard so far or, are the first user reports brimming over with praise? At first glance, research reveals an initial overwhelming applause for Apple. In the New York Times, David Pogue is quoted as saying,
Leopard is powerful, polished and carefully conceived. Happy surprises, and very few disappointments, lie around every corner. This Leopard has more than 300 new spots, and most of them are bright ones.
Cory of NFi Studios is a huge fan
of the stack concepts that have been implemented into the new dock. The default stacks are ‘Documents’ and ‘Downloads.
This is great for cleaning up your desktop. Overall, the Dock is much prettier than it used to be. All icons have shadows behind them, and the Dock itself reflects windows near it. The new Finder is awesome! For those of you who don’t already know, the new Finder allows you to view files with the ‘Cover Flow’ view system. This is great for pre-viewing files before opening them. What’s even better, you can now open many files for even closer preview, without actually opening their default applications! This is a great time saver for those of you with limited system resource, who don’t want to open every photoshop file in a directory to see which one you want.” Concerning Apple’s new Macintosh operating system, Simson Garfinkel writes,
Visually stunning, OS 10.5–a.k.a. Leopard–is fast and stable, and it features a consistent set of powerful file-management tools familiar to anyone who has ever used iTunes. And unlike Microsoft Windows, which seems to grind slower with each successive release, OS 10.5 feels faster than 10.4 on the same hardware
