Social television (also social interactive television) is a general term for technology that supports communication and interaction in the context of watching television, or related to TV content.  It also includes the study of television-related social behavior. Social television systems can for example integrate voice communication, text chat, presence and context awareness, TV recommendations, ratings, or video-conferencing with the TV set. Social television is an active area of research and development. Most existing social television systems are on a conceptual stage, or exist as lab prototypes, beta or pilot versions.

Writing for Associations Now, (ASAE & the Center for Association Leadership) Jeff Waddle, (a freelance writer based in Cincinnati, Ohio) notes, “… a revolution of sorts is underway, largely due to advances in technology and a society and economy that make continual learning a requirement.  Technology has made it easier to obtain information without attending a conference in person, and popular social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook allow friends and colleagues to stay connected in sophisticated ways. Those attending meetings are now considered "participants" who want to tell their stories and hear those of their peers.

NFi Studios has their eye on TED, as we continue to gain new ideas and inspiration in the world of technology.

TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with two annual conferences -- the TED Conference in Long Beach and Palm Springs each spring, and the TEDGlobal conference in Oxford UK each summer -- TED includes the award-winning TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Project and Open TV Project, the inspiring TEDx program and the annual TED Prize.
